A pocket cruisermicrocruisertrailer sailer or pocket yacht is a small lightweight sailboat with a cabindesigned for recreational cruising. Pocket cruisers can be readily loaded on a trailer and towed by most passenger automobiles. Both commercially made and designs for home built pocket cruisers are available.

Those of us who become emotionally involved in the recreational boating life usually start off small with a simple vessel and move up in size as our bodies and fortunes grow. Further along in years, however, many return from whence they came and downsize, as physical prowess diminishes and caution replaces daring on the open water. Over the decades, after rowboats and paddling kayaks and canoes, I started in sailing with a foot centerboarder and moved up to regularly sailing keelboats of 25, 28, 32 and 35 feet.

Although Presto 30s are sadly no longer in production, the nine built in Bucksport by Union River Boat Company between and demonstrate inspired design and top-quality construction. During our four-year ownership of one of these innovative pocket cruisers, we met many people who rowed over in anchorages to ask about the unusual-looking little craft.

Like the similar and usually smaller trailer sailer they have design features to make it possible to tow them with passenger vehicles, such as light weight, and short ballasted retractable shoal draft keels. Being cruisers, they also include amenities that provide the comfort of larger boats, such as a cabinwith berthsa galleya headand cockpit. Properly equipped, these style boats are capable of long offshore passages,  as proven by circumnavigators Eric and Susan HiscockLin and Larry Pardeyand Tania Aebiamong others.

I have been doing some research on alternative cruising boats, and am starting to like the more outside the box cruisers like Bolger's AS39, Chris Morejohn's hogfish and hogfish maximus, Norwalk island sharpies and the like. From what I've read, they sound like pretty good boats.
